Since 2020, FACT’s Digital Artist Residencies have supported over 20 early-career artists based in the North of England and North Wales to create new digital artworks. Artists have produced podcasts, live streams, games, animations, performances, short films, interactive artworks, workshops and more.
Digital Artist Residencies
Supporting emerging and local artists has always been at the heart of FACT and our ethos. These residencies are one of many ways that we continue our commitment to championing new ideas and experiences, and nurturing the next generation of voices and visionaries to create a world of possibilities.
Studio/Lab
With the opening of Studio/Lab in 2024, our new experimental, creative production space on the top floor of FACT, residencies are now hosted here, giving artists improved access to mentorship and technical equipment, more partnership-working across Liverpool, and a dedicated space to support their practice.
Access to Studio/Lab is through Artist Membership, which is a complimentary benefit for our digital residents. This includes mentorship, artist critiques, digital surgeries, professional development sessions, community meetings, socials, and knowledge-sharing opportunities with artists and creatives with expertise in various practices. Studio/Lab also has many rooms, tools and equipment on offer to support artists, including video editing and podcast suites, new-generation technology, an entry-level immersive kit, and digital production tools.
2024
These artist residencies continued our commitment to supporting emerging artists working at the intersection of games, culture, art and technology. All four artists were in the early stages of their careers and are based in the North of England.
The residencies provided a unique opportunity for the selected artists to develop their practice, create new work and display their artworks in Art Plays Games, an exhibition dedicated to showcasing games created by digital artists and independent video game developers. The selected artists for the DaDa residency also showcased their work as part of DaDaFest International in March 2025.

2026
This year, FACT will host 3 residencies for emerging artists based in the North West of England and North Wales with a digital arts practice. This year’s residencies focus on world-building and creative experimentation using Unreal Engine. Artists will receive structured technical workshops led by Lucid Games, alongside curatorial and creative mentoring from FACT and their chosen partner organisation. Each resident will receive £4,500 to develop a digital artwork using Unreal Engine, supported by Lucid Games, DaDa (Disability and Deaf Arts), or Homotopia.
