Michelle Wren’s visual arts practice combines sculpture, collage, animation and video design and is underscored by a commitment to social activism. Graduating from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2004, Michelle’s unique aesthetic, drawing from photomontage and DIY arts culture, brings a tactile relatability and humour to her exploration of important contemporary issues through installation, performance and socially engaged arts projects.
Over the past 16 years Michelle has been developing public artworks through creative processes that amplify voices, support local advocacy and address conflict. Conversation, deep listening and mapping exercises - which visualise local experiences of place or issue - are vital in this work, which has included large scale public commissions for WonderArts (2023), Heart of Glass (2022), Brandalism (2021), Slovenia’s National Puppet Theatre (2019), Super Slow Way Lancashire (2018) and Middlesbrough Council (2018). She is a long term collaborator of Commonwealth Theatre, Bradford.
