Amartey Golding is a British artist who often turns to his Anglo-Scottish and Ghanaian ancestry by way of a Rastafarian upbringing as a point of departure from which to explore the seemingly contradictory fabric of our human condition. Golding began his practice as a teenager, selling his first works from his youth hostel room. He went on to study Architecture, Space, and Objects at Central Saint Martins for three years before leaving to focus entirely on his practice. His design background continues to inform his work today, often blurring the practical with the conceptual. Golding works across a wide range of mediums, including drawing, printmaking, sculpture, film, chainmail, and wig-making. He draws on a wide array of cultural references – from popular culture and folklore to intuition and hearsay – to inform his work. His process prioritises the knowledge of everyday people, celebrating the unspoken truths that connect us all. Golding’s work is intuitive and focuses on visceral communication, aiming to make work that draws from the valuable conversations taking place within the communities he resides in while putting those perspectives under scrutiny. Golding has exhibited internationally, with solo shows at institutions including TRAMWAY Glasgow, The Power Plant Toronto, and has been commissioned by the V&A Museum, Autograph ABP, and Film and Video Umbrella.
