Join us on Wednesday 9 September 2026 for a delightfully mundane and charming comedy-drama that follows Tomo and Marek, two London newcomers, strangers, and teenagers, as they try to enjoy the summer without getting into too much trouble. Somers Town (2008) is a hilarious slice-of-life story, with lead performances that are so effortlessly natural, you’ll forget you’re watching a film.

Marek, a lonely Polish teenage boy living with his dad, meets Tomo, who has run away from a care home in Nottingham. The pair quickly bond over their attraction to an older teenage girl named Maria, who works at their local café, and Marek decides to help Tomo get back on his feet. What unfolds is an endearing tale of two teenagers running wild in Somers Town, Camden, with only their plucky optimism to guide them.

What started as a short film script written by Paul Fraser evolved into a feature length film after Shane Meadows took on the role of director. Hot off the release of his cult classic drama This is England, Meadows wanted to expand the short story by using improvised performances grown organically out of an intensive rehearsal timetable, once again casting Thomas Turgoose as the cheeky, emotionally layered lead. The directors and production team also decided to shoot in black & white, as they “felt [it] would give the film a cohesive quality, pulling together the many different textures, shapes and forms that fill Somers Town.”

Our Young Film Programmers listened to audience requests to consider British realist cinema and chose Somers Town. It’s also the perfect choice for September, the month of new beginnings for many students, who will be able to relate to the themes of growing up, and creating friendships and a home away from home in a new, unfamiliar place.
