Join us on Wednesday 8 April 2026 for a colourful comedy with cult classic status, from Japanese director Tetsuya Nakashima. Chosen by our focus group of young film programmers for its bright, vibrant style and playful editing and cinematography, Kamikaze Girls (2004) follows the unlikely friendship between the eccentric Rococo-obsessed Momoko and a punk, ladies-only biker gang leader, Ichiko, as the pair navigate life in the countryside.

SHIMO 03

Kamikaze Girls is a live action adaptation of the 2002 novel Shimotsuma Monogatari: Yankī-chan to Rorīta-chan (下妻物語 ヤンキーちゃんとロリータちゃん) by author and fashion designer, Novala Takemoto, whose passion for fashion results in characters with boldly defined styles. The film honours this designer's lens, as Nakashima creates an extremely hyper-stylised aesthetic where every character's unique and dramatic costuming is dialled to the max.

Prepare yourself for fast-cut montages, high energy manga sequences, and fourth wall breaking, as our Sweet Lolita loving protagonist, Momoko, takes us on an extremely surreal coming-of-age journey, like you've never experienced before.

After the screening, there will be a post-film discussion where everyone is welcome to share their thoughts about Kamikaze Girls.

This film is rated 12, with some scenes featuring minor violence, blood and smoking.
