Bottoms (2023) follows two lesbian best friends, PJ and Josie, who start a high school fight club to get close to cheerleaders, in the hopes of losing their virginity before graduation. It’s not long until the pair are in way over their heads, as the popular girls start beating each other up in the name of self defence. Think Heathers (1988) and Fight Club (1999) thrown into a blender, with a soundtrack composed in part by Charli xcx - it’s this generation’s entry into the satirical, absurdist, teen movie genre.
Despite only being released two years ago, Bottoms is a queer coming-of-age film that has all the makings of a cult classic. It marries different eras of high school fashions, features a cast of fresh faces with golden comedic timing, and has a script packed full of hilarious quotes that will never leave you.
