Pioneering Black independent filmmaker Charles Burnett paints an intimate, funny and deeply human portrait of life in 1980s South Central Los Angeles.

Pierce Mundy is a proud working-class young man employed at his family’s dry-cleaning business. When his brother announces his engagement to a woman from a wealthier background, Pierce finds himself caught between his family’s expectations and his loyalty to Soldier, a childhood friend recently released from prison.

Presented as part of FACT’s Black History Month programme.

Following his landmark debut Killer of Sheep, Charles Burnett brings warmth, humour and compassion to this story of family, friendship and class. Rooted in the rhythms of everyday life, My Brother’s Wedding offers an intimate view of Black working-class Los Angeles and a powerful counterpoint to the depictions of South Central that would later dominate popular cinema.

Originally screened as an unfinished rough cut in 1983, the film remained difficult to see until Burnett re-edited and restored it in 2007. This new 4K restoration continues the work of honouring the filmmaker’s original artistic vision.

A new 4K restoration by Prasad lab, Chennai, including frame-by-frame image repair, colour correction and digital mastering, in collaboration with Milestone Films, UCLA Film & Television Archive and Kino Lorber.
