Runtime: 101 minutes mins

Genre: Action

A sequel that came 15 years after John Carpenter’s cult classic Escape from New York, Snake Plisskin (Kurt Russell) returns to save the day in post-apocalyptic action film, Escape from L.A.

Set in 2013 following a catastrophic earthquake, Los Angeles is an isolated island, home to citizens who reject the strict morality laws now governing the US. Snake’s new mission is to intercept Utopia (A.J. Langer), the daughter of the President, who holds the detonator to her dad's apocalyptic weapon which has the power to change the face of human existence forever.

Receiving a critical reception upon its initial release in 1996, Carpenter’s sequel has earned itself a cult following with it’s unforgettable set pieces (the tsunami surfing car chase scene) and memorable support from Steve Buscemi, Pam Grier, Peter Fonda, and Bruce Campbell. Got a smoke?

ARTIST SELECTS FILM SEASON

This season, we invited artist Uma Breakdown to select two films to screen alongside their solo exhibition (20 October 2023 - 28 January 2024) and unpack some of the pop-culture and horror references found in their multimedia installation, Earth A.D. 2 (2023).

This film was selected by Uma Breakdown because of the artist’s interest in “unstable stories and characters which continue beyond the author's original intent”. Uma says “rarely speaking for himself, Snake is a character made up of bits of stories told by others, none of which are complete or confirmed. With Escape from L.A. John Carpenter and Debra Hill have written as much a piece of fan-fiction of their own previous film as Hideo Kojima’s ‘Metal Gear’ video games with their multiple Snakes are of the series as whole”.
