Part of the Cinema in the City season

Join us this summer for fun family film screenings, nature hunts, and creative activities at Bootle Library and Christ Church Bootle – all inspired by the magic of nature and part of this year’s public libraries' Summer Reading Challenge. Pop-up cinema, big adventures, and lots to explore – right on your doorstep.

When a mysterious 50-foot-tall robot crash-lands off the coast of Rockwell, Maine, its mission is disrupted, and something remarkable happens. Its programming falters, revealing not a weapon, but a friendly and curious soul. Lost in the woods, the giant is discovered by nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes, and an unlikely friendship begins.

Directed by Brad Bird (The IncrediblesRatatouille), The Iron Giant (1999) is a heartfelt animated classic about connection, courage, and choosing who you want to be - even when the world tells you otherwise. As Hogarth helps the robot navigate life on Earth, the story unfolds into a moving reflection on empathy, fear, and the power of friendship. Before the screening, join us at Christ Church Bootle from 13:00-13:45 for a nature hunt in the church grounds - a little adventure to set the tone for this heartwarming tale.

The Little Bird and the Squirrel

Each film screening at Christ Church Bootle will follow one of Lena von Döhren's short films from her The Little Bird series. Before THE IRON GIANT begins, you can see THE LITTLE BIRD AND THE SQUIRREL (2014).

It's autumn. A little black bird comes along to water a yellow leaf. Suddenly, a squirrel nicks the bird's bright green watering can and an exciting chase through the forest begins. But behind the fiery red fox is already waiting for his chance.

ACCESS

The venue is fully wheelchair accessible. The film will be screened with open captions to provide an inclusive viewing experience. Open captions help to ensure that all viewers, regardless of their hearing abilities, can fully experience and engage with the film screening.

Cinema in the City in Bootle is presented by FACT and At the Library, in partnership with Sefton Libraries and Christ Church Bootle.

Supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
