Experiencing Intersectionality: Other Perspectives, Other Lives is an International showcase event we are hosting as part of a series of events for Articulating Women, an international networking project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) that seeks to raise awareness of the complexities of gender expectations and constraints within different cultural contexts.

The showcase aims to explore the 'intersectional experience' of gender with an exciting day of talks, presentations, and audience-involved discussions between artists, academics, and the public.

Intersectionality is a powerful framework for understanding how identity markers like class, race, sexuality, age, religion, caste, disability, national identity, and political belief can limit women’s lives, as well as offer privileges to different forms of womanhood. These intersections mediate the various social expectations placed on women in any given context and cultural assumptions about what it means to be an acceptable 'woman'.

The showcase event will present the work of artists and academics working across the UK, Asia, Africa and North America. Throughout the day, a 360° Virtual Reality story, The Other Dakar (Tribeca Film Festival 2017), by Dakar-based artist and designer, Selly Raby Kane, will be available for guests to experience in our Learning Space.

Articulating Women is a partnership between FACT; Bluecoat Arts Centre; Christ University, Bengaluru; and Liverpool Hope University. The Showcase event has received additional support from Electric South; the AHRC's Creative Economy Programme; and the NWCDTP (North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership).
