Feral Metaverse is a chaotic, exploratory multi-player game. Taking inspiration from massive online role-playing games such as World of Warcraft, Theo’s work provides an artistic response and counterbalance to Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse; a highly monitored and productive virtual environment. Instead, Feral Metaverse is a place free from capitalist conditions, where players are encouraged to explore their most primitive and instinctual behaviours.
Dropped naked and voiceless into a vast landscape, all usual social boundaries are obliterated as avatars may scream into the void or bury their head in the sand. Within this world, players revert to pre-verbal creatures where the only aim is to discover ways of communicating and cooperating with one another.
This installation of Feral Metaverse includes a bespoke three-person seating arrangement inspired by medieval contraptions, mirroring the collaborative yet potentially hostile dynamics of the game. Existing somewhere between dystopia and utopia, real and imaginary, purgatory and waiting room, Theo’s work resets the rules we typically encounter within virtual spaces. By encouraging reckless abandon, Feral Metaverse opens up online gaming as a space for possible liberation.
