Sitting 2023 Summuya Khader

Reimagining Black Futures

We are delighted to introduce Reimagining Black Futures, a new commission from collaborators Sumuyya, Ni Maxine and Mia Thornton.

For Black History Month, we invited Liverpool and North West-based artists, curators, collectives, and creatives to share proposals for events that celebrate Black Futures and think about how they affect the here and now. Sumuyya, Ni, and Mia invite you to celebrate Black creativity and build connections across the Liverpool creative scene.

Welcome to the world of REIMAGINING BLACK FUTURES. This is a brainchild nurtured by three remarkable Black women who call Liverpool their home – Sumuyya, Ni Maxine, and Mia (Mimi) Thornton. This gathering is your spot, a place where all you North West Black creatives can kick back, have a friendly chat about your creative journeys, and dream up the wonderful changes you'd like to see happening in your lives and creative community. REIMAGINING BLACK FUTURES isn't a one-off event; it's a welcoming space where we collectively shape our destinies, blending our artistic passions.

This is all about sparking genuine conversations about what it's like to be a Black creative and the amazing transformations we're eager to see unfold in our lives and our local neighbourhoods. It's the beginning of a mission we hold dear – to build a vibrant community where Black creativity, voices, and ownership shine brightly.

Here's what's on the horizon for you:

  • A chance to mingle and catch-up with your fellow North West Black creatives in the relaxed atmosphere of FACT’s café.

  • We'll lead some heartfelt discussions, providing a space for you to share your thoughts on the past, present, and future of Black art and creativity in Liverpool. We'll toss out some thought-provoking questions, and you're welcome to join in with a friendly chat or jot down your reflections, however suits your fancy.

  • Listen to a range of sounds from the diaspora selected by renowned DJ, producer, event manager and creator of Chop Life Party, Papu Raf.

  • Immerse yourself in a month-long art showcase featuring works by Julian Gill, aka Did Eye Shutter, Anthony Wild, and our very own Sumuyya Khader.

Note: This event is exclusively for folks with Black, African, and/or Caribbean roots, including those with mixed backgrounds.

Please be aware there will be photography and filming at this event.
