Will Shannon and Assemble propose the transformation of an ordinary house into a series of workshop spaces for domestic making. Each workshop would create bespoke furnishings for the home, exploring a different material process in turn. Presented at FACT are models of four machines and samples of the type of objects they produce, alongside a full-scale Yard Factory for casting concrete.

During April and May this year, Shannon and Assemble transformed the backyard of 48 Cairns Street in Liverpool into a concrete casting factory. They worked with local apprentices to produce formwork and cast elements of ten mantelpieces that are now installed in the houses on Cairns Street. The casting process included reclaimed materials from the housing refurbishment such as broken roof tiles and bricks.

The project has been developed in association with architecture collective Assemble and the Granby Four Streets Community Land Trust (CLT). This is the first urban CLT and was founded by local residents with the aim of redeveloping a cluster of derelict terraced houses in Toxteth, Liverpool.
