Sophie Mak-Schram

Tools of the Talking Trade, Jul – Sep 2018

Sophie is interested in digitally-mediated interaction in the workplace, particularly applications that are consciously designed to facilitate informal or “fun” working processes. Our smartphones are double agents of constant freedom and continuous work, and applications such as Slack claim to be “where work happens” but also promote informality as a way of fostering productivity.

Sophie will investigate alternative sets of performance indicators and “slack” time in the workspace, through a split residency in a tech start-up and a hairdressing studio, Sophie will compare and contrast the tools used in flat hierarchy business models. Through this project Sophie will assess how communications technologies are being adopted and adapted for different workplaces.
