Missa of Zen

A short, quiet work, Missa of Zen is a TV screen seen out the corner of the eye of a video camera. Similar to the moment in the Suite 212 (1975) piece in the TV as a New Language section in Gallery 2, Missa of Zen looks at television as an image making machine rather than focusing on the content it is presenting. Jud Yalkut, the New York based video artist who collaborated with Paik to make this piece later wrote the essay Electronic Zen. The discords between East and West , an ongoing interest of Paik's which is also played with in this work - Missa referencing Christian Mass and Zen coming from Buddhism. Paik was interested in the transcendental possibilities of television.
