The video installation Immersion shows the treatment of war trauma through the use of virtual reality scenarios. Over a period of two days, Harun Farocki filmed a workshop in Fort Lewis, Washington State, where therapists explained how a computer animation software called Virtual Iraq can be used to enable traumatised soldiers to repeat and retell key experiences in the virtual world.
This immersion into a virtual world is meant to help the soldiers gradually cope better with their terrifying experiences. The process is carried out through role plays, with the patients wearing head mounted displays visiting different digital sites, and the therapist triggering the events to be treated. In his video installation, Farocki juxtaposes the virtual game scenario with the documentation of the workshop.
