Over 160,000 people will have made the pilgrimage to the International San Diego Comic Con last weekend, the largest convention of its kind, the Mecca for all geeks. The cosplayers were out, the celebrities carted around and the world’s media were there widely reporting on the events and the costumes as if they were covering the likes of Glastonbury, (and only 135,000 attended that party).
Now, I’m a trailer fanatic. I’m the type of person that goes to the cinema and enjoys the trailers sometimes more than the film. My main reason for getting excited about San Diego Comic Con every year is that a whole heap of films that I’ve been reading about for months or years will have their new trailers played in the hallowed convention centre halls and then they’ll be subsequently released on YouTube for you, me and the rest of the world to experience, finally revealing their look and tone, and maybe even a surprise or two!
2016’s Comic Con did not disappoint. Each of these newly released trailers were shown at this years convention and are sure to leave you sniggering or mouthing a silent, ‘wow’.
DC have always done bad guys better than they do heroes and Suicide Squad, released Friday 5 August, looks set to reverse all of the woes of Batman V Superman. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is taking the lead of the anarchic troop, while it looks like Jared Leto’s Joker might just be trying to throw some spanners (or switchblades) into the works. This will be the final trailer before the film comes out and it looks like a little more plot has been revealed, as the anti-heroes seem to be fighting a powerful, crowned and as yet unknown villain.
Marvel have been light on their film trailers this year, keeping a super secret clip of Thor: Ragnarok for Comic Con goers only, and mostly amping people up for their Netflix crossover series The Defenders, a team that consists of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and The Iron Fist. Although the one film trailer they screened promised to send MCU fans a little crazy, as they revealed the Inception-style, mind bending trailer for Dr. Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
JK Rowling’s welcome return to the wizarding world is not far from release and here’s another trailer to reveal a few plot clues. It appears that Newt Scamander has lost some of his fantastical beasts in New York (and Liverpool’s St. George’s Hall by the looks of things.) Colin Farrell looks brooding, Katherine Waterston’s concerned and Eddie Redmayne is every bit a dashing and bewildered hero. Perhaps the most exciting part of the trailer is the reworking of Hedwig’s theme from the original Harry Potter film, now with triumphant and booming horns from the get go. I have to admit, I’m excited!
Kong: Skull Island
Giant monster film fans, I hear your excitement. Warner bros announced last year that there would be a new King Kong film and that it would appear in the same world as 2014’s Godzilla, and Kaiju fans, there’s going to be a crossover in 2020, Godzilla vs. Kong. Before we get too ahead of ourselves though, there’s Kong: Skull Island to look forward to, and a real meeting of great actors, as Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman starring opposite each other looks incredible! This Kong will be set in the 70s and will also star Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston.
DC got a lot of stick for their attempt at creating a universe to rival Marvel’s. The only widely applauded part was Gal Gadot’s performance as Wonder Woman, who we heard would soon get her own film. Kicking ass, firing arrows at people with cannons, that awesome Wonder Woman score with the screaming guitars and heavy drums! This film looks like it is going to be incredible. It should also be mentioned that Marvel, who have 12 films under their belt and are currently in their third phase, have only just cast their first female lead, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel...
When I saw The Lego Movie, my first reaction was to check the internet for sequel rumours, and I wasn’t surprised to see there would be one, but I was pretty shocked to see there would be a Batman spin-off first. Will Arnett reprises his role as the super dark and mysterious Batman and this new trailer reveals that Robin will be voiced by Michael Cera and that they will be facing the Dark Knight’s greatest foe, The Joker.
Justice League Part one
Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne takes on the Marvel equivalent role of Tony Stark/Nick Fury and gathers his Justice League of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg. Nothing much to report on the film or Cyborg yet, but Ezra Miller looks like a much needed bit of comic relief as The Flash and the brute force of Jason Momoa will put an end to any Aquaman jokes.
If you didn’t manage to make it to San Diego last weekend, not to worry you weren’t the only one! You can get a taste of that action in Manchester this weekend where they’re holding their very own Comic Con.
