The Wind Rises 3

The Wind Rises is ‘another masterpiece’ from the visionary behind such films as Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and Spirited Away. In a film which is ‘never less than visually breathtaking, Miyazaki has created a stunning finale to his incredible career. The Wind Rises is inspired by aeroplane designer Jiro Horikoshi, caught between two world wars, with Japan’s economic future looking bleak and the rise of fascism.

He spends his nights dreaming of wing walking with his heroes whilst his days are spent struggling to make a living and pursue his dreams. During the devastating earthquake of 1923, he hallucinates bombers flying overhead and ‘he knows his life’s work will bring about exactly this kind of destruction, and yet he keeps going, spurred on by the beauty of his designs rather than their deadly purpose.’

The film is Miyazaki’s first to take place in the real world rather than a unique fantastical realm. The Wind Rises ‘blends tragedy, comedy, elegy, romance and apocalypse’ into a story which no other director could be capable of with one critic describing it as ‘an emotionally generous and expansively detailed romantic fantasy.’

The film is screening in both Dubbed and Subtitled versions. Check our What’s On page to find out screening times. The voice cast brings together an incredible array of talent including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt.
