Kurosawa's masterpiece is a keystone of Japanese cinema, an unforgettable blend of an epic action film and a lyrical work of art. In feudal 16th-century Japan, a group of samurai are hired by peasants to protect their village from a raid by a gang of ruthless bandits. Out of this story Kurosawa fashions an epic tale with a narrative rich in action, mood and character, and some dazzling imagery, especially in the climactic rain drenched battle scenes. It’s fitting that the film which inspired The Magnificent Seven itself reflects Kurosawa's admiration of the Hollywood western, in particular the work of John Ford. “Kurosawa's masterpiece... the epic action scenes involving cavalry and samurai are still without peer” – TimeOut This screening will include a 5-minute intermission.
