The film that brought Hitchcock to Hollywood’s attention, THE LADY VANISHES is a masterful comedy-thriller that for many ranks among the director’s very finest works. The film centres on Iris Henderson (Lockwood), who becomes acquainted with a kindly old lady, Miss Froy, while travelling home to England on a train across Europe. When Iris awakens from a nap, Miss Froy has vanished, replaced by someone else in her clothing. Iris talks to the other passengers, a bizarre collection of eccentrics who all think that she is crazy for insisting on there even having been a Miss Froy – everyone denies having seen her. But Iris refuses to give up, and joins forces with a young British man (Redgrave) to solve the mystery. As fresh and funny now as it was on release, THE LADY VANISHES is sheer visual pleasure.
