The third installment of our film-based lecture series exploring sexuality and sensuality within Chinese cinema, in partnership with the Department of Chinese Studies (History), University of Liverpool.
Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy (2011), directed by Christopher Suen, is an erotic comedy set in the Ming Dynasty. Loosely based on The Carnal Prayer Mat, a seventeenth-century Chinese pornographic novel that had been interpreted by literary scholars as a relentless attack on Confucian morality and as a Chinese parallel to Marquis de Sade, the film is filled with both sophomoric humour and sadomasochistic sex. 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy showcases Chinese understandings of excess, violence, and exploitation.
