Director: Robert Greene. USA 2016. 112 mins.
“TV 40 news personality Christine Chubbuck shot herself in a live broadcast this morning on a Channel 40 talk programme. She was rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.” Shockingly, this is a real-life news bulletin from 1974. Even more shockingly, the bulletin was composed by Chubbuck herself, who left it on the studio desk before putting the gun to her head. She died some hours later. Who was Christine Chubbuck, and why did she do this horrifying thing? Director Robert Greene and actor Kate Lyn Sheil explore Chubbuck’s actions from the inside, making a boldly self-reflexive attempt to ‘perform’ her story as Sheil prepares to play Chubbuck on film. A Sundance 2016 award winner, the result is a provocative and at times even eerie meditation not just on Chubbuck’s life and death, but also on performance, voyeurism and documentary truth.
