With echoes of Romeo And Juliet and West Side Story, Black emerges from the ganglands of Brussels. Here we meet young Marwan (Bensaihi), ill prepared to assume leadership of the clan known as the 1080s after his brother’s imprisonment.
Marwan falls for 15-year-old Mavela (Antonio), a neophyte member of the rival, extremely vicious Black Bronx clan. But with his brother gone, Marwan has little understanding of the deadly consequences. As in 2014’s gang drama Girlhood, Mavela herself is less a criminal than a rebel, but she is locked into a brutally upheld regime, and soon discovers the dangers.
With affecting performances from a largely non-professional cast, young writer-directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi amply deserve their Toronto International Film Festival Discovery Award.
