The harrowing ordeal of the titular 33 men trapped for weeks 2,000 feet underground in 2010’s Chilean mining disaster is brought to the big screen by Mexican director Patricia Riggen. The miners’ spirits vacillate between hope, determination and despair as they await rescue. Their compelling story is expertly captured by cinematographer Checco Varese and co-writer Craig Borten.
The strong cast features Antonio Banderas as the miners’ leader and Rodrigo Santoro as a young, inexperienced mining minister supervising the complicated rescue mission whilst parrying global media scrutiny. Juliette Binoche is also affecting as a miner’s sister who provides food for the other families maintaining a vigil above ground. This tense, riveting drama is given added impact by the clever interlacing of actual news footage.
