New York City's "No Wave" scene is the focus of debut director Celine Danhier's insightful documentary, consisting of rarely seen archive footage and intimate talking-heads retrospection. With punk-rock in bloom, late 1970s Manhattan's shabby East Village was the perfect environment for a group of DIY filmmakers to subvert the mainstream and spark a subcultural revolution.

Tracing the art movement from its origins to its demise in the late '80s, Blank City nostalgically  revels in the angst of the new-on-the-scene alt-pop culture pioneers. They include Thurston Moore, John Waters and Jim Jarmusch, as well as those who went on to make it big, such as Blondie's Debbie Harry and one of American indies' favourite actors, Steve Buscemi.
