Cheerful Parisian teacher Nathalie (Huppert) is married to the similarly intellectual Heinz (André Marcon, Marguerite), who suddenly announces that he’s leaving her, predictably enough, for a younger woman.
Although she's able to bear life’s burdens with philosophical fortitude, Nathalie is understandably shaken by the prospect of divorce and consequent loneliness. But she gradually finds rational if not emotional solace with an ex-student (Kolinka) now living in a rural anarchist collective.
