Starring: Pyotr Skvortsov, Yuliya Aug, Viktoriya Isakova. Russia 2016. 118 mins.
Prolific Russian film and theatre director Kirill Serebrennikov explores blind compliance to overarching doctrines in this provocative yet timely tale about a student in the coastal town of Kaliningrad whose religious awakening spirals out of control.
An obsessive reader of the Bible, high-school student Venya (Skvortsov) urges both fellow pupils and his teachers to take the scriptures quite literally, even to the extent of successfully outlawing the clothing he considers provocative and forcing creationism into the curriculum. Venya’s fevered proselytism increasingly vexes his atheist biology teacher (Isakova) and overbearing mother (Aug), and as his fanatical embrace of Christian doctrine intensifies, chaos ensues.
Adapted from Marius von Mayenburg’s controversial play, Martyr, The Student is a beautifully shot bout of moral wrestling and a scathing satire on fundamentalism.
