With a plan to exact revenge on a mythical shark that killed his partner Esteban (Seymour Cassell), acclaimed oceanographer Steve Zissou (Murray, LOST IN TRANSLATION) rallies a crew that alongside his usual team includes his estranged wife (Anjelica Huston), a tenacious journalist (Blanchett, LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING) and a spunky young pilot who may or may not be his estranged son (Wilson, STARSKY AND HUTCH). Wes Anderson’s fourth feature is an absolute delight from beginning to end and confirms the young director as one of contemporary American cinema’s brightest voices. Endlessly inventive (the astonishing animation sequences come courtesy of Henry Selick, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS) and with an attention to detail second to none (including Zissou’s meticulously designed ship and vintage Adidas trainers for the whole crew), Anderson also, as is his custom, pulls together an exceptional cast (Murray is of course excellent and there’s some wonderful support from the likes of Jeff Goldblum and Bud Cort) and he even throws in Portuguese music by David Bowie. Unlike anything you’ll see… at least until the next Wes Anderson movie comes along.
