On the 20th anniversary of director Paul Grimault’s death, this newly restored digital version of his sole full-length feature affirms his influence on European animation.
It centres on the pompous but lonely king of Takicardia (Mazzotti), who shot the wife of the mockingbird-cum-narrator (Martin), who consequently taunts him at every opportunity. He has plenty to mock the king about when he falls for a shepherdess, who has herself just fallen for a young chimneysweep, and embarks on a relentless campaign to capture her and dispose of him.
Bumbling guards, weird inventions and in particular the amazingly rendered palace architecture combine to capture the viewer’s imagination in this delightful classic.
