Fired from Sovkino studio after A Sixth Part of the World, Vertov was soon hired by the All-Ukrainian Photo Cinema Administration, along with his wife and brother. The trio's first assignment was a documentary celebrating the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution and in part seemed to be the same kind of propagandist film as Stride, Soviet! and A Sixth Part of the World. But while the political theme of The Eleventh Year may be orthodox and plain, its photography and editing are daring and complex. In the eyes of a left-wing artist of the twenties, ten years of Socialism was a radical social experiment, and as such, deserved, nay, required to be presented in a radically experimental way.
One of Vertov’s montage-driven documentaries, The Eleventh Year displays the feats of Soviet technology and construction. According to Vertov himself, the film uses ‘the language of the eye’ as well as the ‘socialist language’ in its documentary depictions of the accomplishments of the Soviet state in its eleventh year.
We are proud to welcome London based band, Barquentines (Stef Ketteringham, Pedro del Battenberg, Daniel Kowser) to provide the experimental and immersive live soundtrack for this special film screening event.
