- Running time113 minutes
A special Encore performance of the very first New York Met Opera to be beamed to our screens back in 2006, Julie Taymor's production of The Magic Flute.
This abridged, 100-minute version of Die Zauberflöte, the last produced stage work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is performed in a new one-act English translation by poet J.D. McClatchy.
A sublime fairy tale that moves between earthy comedy and noble mysticism, the opera was originally written to appeal to audiences from all walks of life. The story is told in a Singspiel (‘song-play’) format characterised by separate musical numbers connected by dialogue and busy action, an excellent structure for navigating the piece’s diverse moods and wide range of sensibilities.
The comic and earthy is represented by the baritone Papageno; true love in its noblest form is conveyed by the tenor, Tamino, and the soprano, Pamina; and the bass Sarastro expresses the solemn and the transcendental.
Vocal fireworks are provided by the coloratura Queen of the Night. Mozart died three months after the 1791 Vienna premiere of the full-length Die Zauberflöte.
