Its subtitle, SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD, neatly summarises this forceful docudrama, which recounts the story of four deaf boys abused by a Catholic priest in Milwaukee and their long, lonely battle to bring him to justice.
Gibney (ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM) follows a cover-up all the way to the Vatican, and his often disturbing film subtly ratchets up the tension towards a remarkable conclusion. Credit for this must also be bestowed on Sheridan (Homeland), Slattery (Mad Men’s Roger Sterling), Cooper (THE TOWN, SYRIANA) and Hawke (BEFORE SUNSET), who voice the victims.
Gibney adds details of similar cases in Ireland, Latin America and elsewhere, making his film an even greater indictment of the Catholic Church, in which he himself was raised.
