Director: Roger Donaldson.
Featuring: Dwayne Cameron, Bruce McLaren. New Zealand 2016. 93 mins.
Bruce McLaren was the cheery but steely New Zealander who, during a hugely successful early career in motorsport, founded his own manufacturing company which remains a dominant force in Formula One, long after his tragic death in 1970. Aged just 14 years old, he restored an Austin 7-based hillclimb car and soon moved on to pure circuit racing, coming second in the 1957/8 New Zealand championship driving a Cooper. He moved to England to join the Cooper team in 1959, from where, aided by his intuitive engineering skills, he won the 1959 USA Grand Prix and that same year went on to ever greater glory. In this tribute to an incredible innovator, director Donaldson (who made the motorcycle-racing movie The Fastest Indian In The World) makes use of gripping archive footage, cunning recreations and many moving interviews.
