Vivian, an uptight and fragile New York intellectual (Shaver, THE COLOR OF MONEY), arrives in 1950s rural Nevada to establish the residency necessary to divorce her tedious Reno-based husband.
Staying on a ranch owned by her old friend Frances (Lindley), she finds her emotions unexpectedly stirred by Frances’ adopted daughter Cay (Charbonneau, KISS THE SKY), a sassy part-time casino worker and unabashed lesbian ten years her junior.
Documentarist Deitch’s first feature was a groundbreaking, accessible and often amusing story of a woman discovering her sexuality, with terrific performances from its major players, and a smart script based on Jane Rule’s celebrated novel.
It is 1950s Nevada, and Professor Vivian Bell arrives to get a divorce. She's unsatisfied with her marriage, and feels out of place at the ranch she stays on, she finds herself increasingly drawn to Cay Rivers, an open and self-assured lesbian, and the ranchowner's daughter. The emotions released by their developing intimacy, and Vivian's insecurities about her feelings towards Cay, are played out against a backdrop of rocky landscapes and country and western songs.
