Lauda: The Untold Story + Satellite Q&A Cert. PG Picture house at FACT

  • Running time155 minutes
  • GenreDocumentary

The final panel for the Q&A hosted by Suzi Perry is director Hannes Schalle, F1 Safety car driver Bernd Mayländer and, very welcome new addition, ex F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella. Unfortunately Jacques Villeneuve’s travel plans had to change due to reasons outside of his control and he is no longer going to make it to the UK in time for the Q&A.

This special screening will be followed by a live satellite Q&A hosted by Suzi Perry, and featuring director Hannes Schalle, F1 legends Jacques Villeneuve and Marc Webber, and long-time safety car driver Bernd Mayländer.

Centred on Niki Lauda’s horrendous crash at the Nürburgring in 1976, this thought-provoking documentary by Hannes Michael Schalle is partially an account of Lauda’s almost miraculous return to Formula 1 racing just 33 days later, and also provides an extensive analysis of how safety standards have dramatically improved as a consequence.

Sanguine and eloquent, Lauda himself features heavily thanks to interviews given throughout his career, but there’s also commentary from his wife, and from notable peers and successors such as Nico Rosberg, David Coulthard, Jochen Mass, Lewis Hamilton and especially Jackie Stewart, the latter having originally led the campaign to make the sport safer for its drivers. Although produced on a limited, crowdfunded budget, Lauda: The Untold Story is a visually impressive piece of work that motor racing fans won’t fail to be gripped by.
