- Running time240 minutes
Vienna, the 1740s. The aristocratic Marschallin is in love with Octavian, a much younger man. Despite all his protestations of love, she knows that he will one day leave her for a younger woman.
Meanwhile the Marschallin’s boorish cousin Baron Ochs is courting Sophie von Faninal, the daughter of a rich bourgeois. At the Marschallin’s suggestion, Ochs has the handsome Octavian act as his Rosenkavalier (Rose Knight) and present a ceremonial silver rose to Sophie.
But when Octavian meets Sophie, the pair fall in love at first sight. Through a comic intrigue, they get rid of Ochs with the help of the Marschallin, who then yields Octavian to the younger woman.
A glittering comic opera, Der Rosenkavalier also operates at a deeper level. Conscious of the age difference between herself and Octavian, the Marschallin muses in bittersweet fashion over the passing of time, growing old and men’s inconstancy.
