An exclusive private view of the BP exhibition Vikings: Life and Legend in the company of world experts, presented live via satellite.
Introduced by British Museum Director Neil MacGregor and presented by historian and broadcaster Michael Wood, the exhibition will be brought to life by curators Gareth Williams and Tom Williams, alongside experts on Viking ships, swords, burials, beliefs, language and legacy.
You will discover new ideas about the Vikings, as people who were not just deadly raiders and pillagers but also peaceful traders, who sailed far and wide and whose thought-world was inhabited by gods of poetry as well as war.
Swords, axes, coins, jewellery, hoards, amulets and religious images show how the Vikings created an international network connecting cultures across four continents.
At the centre of the exhibition will be the surviving timbers of a 37-metre-long warship, the longest ever found. During the live broadcast craftsmen from the National Maritime Museum will construct the prow of a great Viking ship, to show what made these vessels so spectacular – built for speed, endurance and deadly beauty.
A replica sailing ship will be installed in front of the Museum and a dramatic Viking burial will be staged as night falls.
