America’s National Archives’ most requested photo is of the king of rock ’n’ roll shaking hands with President Nixon.

This riveting comedy drama tells the surreal story behind the iconic image, revealing how Elvis turned up at the White House in December 1970 requesting an audience with Nixon. He was there, ostensibly, to offer to go undercover for the Bureau Of Narcotics And Dangerous Drugs. As the heavily sideburned singer, Michael Shannon perfectly captures Elvis’s swagger and drawl, whilst Kevin Spacey as Nixon betrays that odd mixture of insecurity and bombast that characterised the soon-to-be impeached president.

The results are both hugely comic and a little sorrowful, with Elvis demonstrating his kung fu moves and arsenal of pistols as evidence of his suitability, and Nixon gradually realising how the pop star might boost his flagging fortunes.
