Věra Chytilová's 1960s masterpiece Daisies is a brilliantly surreal trip into an aesthetic paradise, and a utopia where women are liberated from the conservative conventions of etiquette. The film stars two young girls who, upon realising that “Everything’s going bad in this world” decide to “go bad” themselves, and spend the rest of the film in a psychedelic rebellion.
Part of the 60s Czech New Wave (Nová Vina) movement, which aimed "to make the Czech people collectively aware that they were participants in a system of oppression and incompetence which had brutalized them all". It was filmed during a brief period of artistic liberalism following the homogeneity of Czech's Communist rule and before the Soviet invasion of 1968 which saw it banned for "depicting the wanton".
Using many inventive styles - animation, musical numbers, stock footage and slapstick - it's freeform yet controlled, and yet still radical enough for it to have been banned in its homeland, something of a badge of honour in world cinema circles. Simultaneously a brilliant dissent against political conservatism and an endless source of fashion inspiration, Chytilová’s feminist ode to freedom is a sweet, silly, and very serious ode to nihilism in the face of corruption and convention.
Leading up to Psych Fest, FACT and Picturehouse present a special season of Psychedelia in film inspired by Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia. There will also be a series of artist-made shorts curated by FACT showing in the Festival’s cinema space for Psych Fest pass holders.
