Part mystery, part noir, CHINATOWN remains Polanski's most accomplished and accessible film, inspired as it is by the historical disputes over land and water rights that raged in southern California during the 1910s and 1920s.
At the heart of this amoral tale of sex and scandal is Jake Gittes (Nicholson), a private investigator who is hired by a woman (Ladd, INLAND EMPIRE) to spy on the chief engineer of the LA Department of Water and Power. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, and today it's not hard to see why.
