As with his Palme d’Or winning Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, celebrated Thai writer/director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s latest work employs a dreamlike narrative to illuminate the inner lives of its characters.
A group of soldiers are afflicted with a mysterious sleeping sickness. They are consigned to a temporary clinic where a volunteer, Jenjira (Pongpas), befriends a lonely soldier, Itt (Lomnoi). Jenjira enlists the help of a young psychic (Rueangram) to plumb Itt’s soul, releasing memories of loved ones and thoughts which allow him to communicate.
Goddess statues at a local shrine – where Jenjira lights a candle for Itt – take on human form, deepening the mystical quality of their revelations. As with most of Weerasethakul’s films, the visual elements are both distinctive and stunning.
