In a remote Pacific Northwest forest, Ben Cash (Mortensen) raises and radically homeschools his six genius-tinged children whilst his wife, Leslie (Trin Miller), battles with bipolar disorder. When she takes her own life in hospital, her rich, conservative father (Langella) threatens to have Ben arrested if he and the children turn up at her funeral.
Despite this, they embark on a long road trip in their converted bus to attend. The journey offers numerous opportunities for the family’s hippie-going-on-Marxist values to grate against America’s overfed consumerism – opportunities that writer-director Matt Ross and his talented cast avidly mine for both humour and sly ideological reflection. Neither detracts from the core drama as Ben inevitably finds his moral compass challenged by the children he’s striven so hard to cast in his own mould.
