Maestro Otto Preminger’s faithful adaptation of Françoise Sagan’s provocative novel has David Niven convincingly cavalier as Raymond, playboy father to Jean Seberg’s teenage libertine, Cécile.
Fearing her hedonistic lifestyle will be scuppered when Raymond announces his intention to wed a stuffy old friend (Kerr), Cécile slyly plots to frighten her off, a scheme that unfortunately works rather too well. In only her second film after Preminger cast her as SAINT JOAN, his protégée Seberg is radiant as the beguiling villainess of the piece.
Niven’s effortless charm is also given full rein, and Georges Périnal’s cinematography and costumes by Givenchy and Cartier are equally wondrous to behold.
