A portrait of the world’s most influential video artist, the American Bill Viola and his wife and collaborator, Kira Perov. The husband and wife team are captured on their twelve-year odyssey to create and install two permanent video installations, Mary and Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) on either side of the High Altar in St Paul’s Cathedral. This film, made by the award-winning arts documentary director Gerard Fox, also looks back over Viola’s groundbreaking work over the last forty years including a 2007 Venice Biennale show and full retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2014. He offers a deep insight into the creative process involved in the making of these complex, large-scale video installations as well as the nature of the pair’s working relationship. A powerful take on an artist who has taken video installations to new levels of acceptance in contemporary art.
