Director: Tobias Nölle.
Starring: Georg Friedrich, Tilde von Overbeck. Switzerland/France 2016. 91 mins. German with English subtitles.
In this haunting film from first-time director Tobias Nölle, a lonely private investigator is drawn into a fantasy world after a mysterious young woman steals his surveillance tape recordings. Rich with dreamlike imagery and bizarre interludes involving music, stylised sets and farm animals, this strange and enigmatic film expertly shifts genre and tone throughout, being at once a study of paranoia and surveillance, a self-conscious echo of 1974’s The Conversation, and a sweet love story about awkward connections and shared fantasies. A hit at the 2016 Berlinale, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize, Aloys is utterly unique and exciting filmmaking from an exciting new voice in European art-house cinema.
Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex references.
