HeHe - Fracking Futures

Artistic engineers HeHe have turned the gallery space into an experimental drilling site. The environment of the gallery is transformed into an industrial landscape where boreholes are drilled and waste chemicals are treated. HeHe have begun initial exploratory tests to extract shale gas through an innovative process known as fracking. Fracking is short for ‘hydraulic fracturing’, a process of extracting gas by pumping a highly pressurised mixture of water, sand and chemicals underground. This opens fissures in subterranean rocks releasing the gas trapped several miles beneath the earth’s surface.

Great care has been taken to ensure this process is safe and poses no threat to local ground water or the atmosphere. The operation at FACT is being carried out with maximum transparency whilst maintaining audience safety. Initial explorations have already found that the 1,200 sqm licence area directly beneath FACT consists of Holywell shale and might hold at least 20 trillion cubic feet of gas. This energy will be used to ensure the future operation of FACT and the energy created will be exported directly to the local community.

By bringing fracking into FACT, HeHe highlight the importance and relevance of the debates surrounding the process, which are not only significant environmentally, but also economically. This installation refrains from making clear-cut judgements in favour of offering an experiential platform for discussion.

Fracking Futures, by HeHe, was commissioned by FACT in collaboration with The Arts Catalyst

Artists HeHe have turned our Gallery 1 into a miniaturized Fracking site complete with bursts of fire, a pool of toxic water and earth tremors. Fracking has been described as a disaster waiting to happen and ‘incredibly dangerous’. Inspired by HeHe’s work we are launching the Disaster Vine Competition!

Using the 6 second video app, Vine (available to download for free on Android and iPhone), we want you to create a short disaster movie. We’re talking fire, explosions, earthquakes, floods, asteroids, hurricanes, basically anything dangerous!

The videos will be judged on how fun, exciting, interesting and hazardous they look with members of FACT staff and filmmakers sitting on the judging panel.

The top five Vines will be on show on fact.co.uk for our thousands of daily visitors to see and the creator of the winning video receive a tour of Turning FACt Inside Out from our curatorial team for them and their freidns, a free FACT membership, a copy of our We Are the Real Time Experiment book and a selection of other exclusive FACT prizes!

To submit your video, just tag it with #TFIOcomp and the winner will be announced 16 August.
