The Conquest of Film

Whilst television still looked upon rock 'n' roll with skepticism, it was taking centre stage at the cinema. For filmmakers like Richard Lester, the creator of The Beatles films, it was obvious that rock was far more than just music and that the big screen was one of the best places to explore the genre's stars and their art. This section maps the crossover between cinema and music, from directors who began their career making short clips, to the videos which heavily draw on classic films or filmic devices to connect to an audience obsessed with popular culture
