Drawing narrative inspiration from the lives and writings of historical figures such as Rumi, the 13th century Islamic mystic and poet, Bill Viola's The Night Journey is a slow-moving game that unearths the universal story of an individual's journey toward enlightenment. Instead of using standard game 'levels' that signify a linear kind of progression, the game explores a vast space filled with spiritual and reflective destinations, all of which stretch the boundaries of what video games are able to communicate. A pioneer in the development of video art, Viola now turns to computer games in their (relatively) early stage as an artistic medium.
