Mark Leckey - Pearl Vision

Pearl Vision is a self-portrait of material and digital obsession in a time when it is becoming more difficult to tell what is and what isn’t real.

In this short film, the snare drum becomes an object of extreme focus, in a similar way to an advertisement or an instructional YouTube video. However, the actual snare drum remains physically removed from the film, and is presented purely through high definition CGI and audio.

Leckey’s surreal method of self-depiction explores the ambiguous way we perpetuate - and interact with - other versions of ourselves through social networks and online personas.

Originally commissioned by FACT and Jacqui Davies for the Random Acts Programme, screening late at night on Channel 4
