- Part of...Pipilotti Rist
- Gallery 2
Blood Room, 1993/98, is perhaps the most direct of all the works in this exhibition. Originally commissioned for Swiss television by the youth programme Zebra, the piece explores menstruation.
A fish-eyed camera pans in and out, across and along a naked female body out of which blood seems to be oozing. As the blood dribbles across the figure the tolerance of the audience is provoked. An example of Pipilotti at her most challenging, this work makes no concessions and actively acknowledges that menstrual blood makes people feel uncomfortable while being a sign of sanity and power.
